suicide is so close at hand, when you think about it, just walk into the middle of the street…or go to the kitchen grab a knife and cut long and deep into the veins lining your wrists. who hasn’t wished they had the courage to do these things. it is both cowardly and courageous. and for TRYING to commit suicide…if you want to do it, you do. if you want to kill yourself, you make sure you die. an attempt is something else entire…a subliminal ‘i actually love life, but i am tired right now’ scream starting in the deep creases of the brain/mind.

No, I don’t think he is. Reads to me like “café du commerce” talk. I’ve heard this said so many times by so many people and yet I’m not convinced. It’s not because you really want that you really manage. Things don’t work like that. You want it to work like that because it’s easier to classify things like that and it might be true in many cases but it certainly is not as true as he thinks it is.
can’t say whether this has been translated but there is an amazing book-length essay by Jean Améry, “Hand ans sich legen” (despite the name, a German writer)
