I am new to the work of John Wieners, so here goes, uncommented, from the so far interesting Selected Poems, published by Black Sparrow Press that seem worth a recommendation.
John Wieners: Realization
Where has that old spark gone
this sickness could come on?
What use in pretending
our dream of love undoneOld farms await to take us in
to their disease
under rotting apple treesGoing from one drugstore to the next
in snow, as if there were someone
to dream of, these things not so,but left alone, with mother
that is always lonely, to deny all dreams -
the penance of middle age.
